Exercises to Build Arm Muscles

The focus of arm muscle building is on the three muscle groups, biceps, triceps and forearms. There are many exercises for these three muscle groups. These are some muscle building exercises for you.

Biceps: Biceps form the most important part of the muscle building workout. Your bicep workout can comprise exercises such as:

  • Bicep Curls (Standing/Sitting): Hold one dumbbell each in both your hands. Now, let your palms holding the dumbbells face towards the front and slowly lift the left hand dumbbell. Bring it till the shoulder and then again lower it down slowly. Repeat with the other hand.
  • Preacher Curls: Sit on a preacher bench resting your upper arms on the bench with palms facing towards the ceiling. Have somebody hand you a barbell and lower it till your arms become straight on the bench. Let your muscles stretch with it. Lift the barbell till the shoulders and then slowly lower it down.
  • Bicep Concentration Curls: Sit on the edge of a bench, with your legs spread. Now reach towards the dumbbell kept on the floor from between your legs and hold it firmly with your left hand. Let your left elbow touch the knee of your left leg. Hold your right knee with your right hand to support your upper body. Lift the dumbbell till your chest level and then bring it down slowly.
  • Bicep Incline Curls: Sit on an incline bench with dumbbells in both your hands, held sideways. Lift the weight till your shoulders and then bring it down slowly.
  • Dumbbell Hammer Curls: The procedure is quite similar to dumbbell curls, the only difference in this exercise is that you hold the dumbbells with a ‘thumbs up’ grip. Lift the dumbbells till your shoulders and then bring them back slowly.

Triceps: Well toned triceps give an attractive look to the arms. For triceps development your workout should consist of exercises like:

  • Triceps Dumbbell Extensions: Stand erect and take a dumbbell in your hand. Let your hand holding the dumbbell stretch upwards. Now, bring down the dumbbell in an arc position behind your head, till your elbow bends at a 90 degree angle. Come back to the original position.
  • Barbell Extensions: Barbell extensions are similar to the triceps dumbbell extensions. Here you have to hold a barbell in both your hands. Lift it upwards and then bring it down in an arc position behind your head, with your elbows at 90 degrees.
  • Triceps Push Downs: Stand in front of a overhead pulley and attach a small bar to it. Decide the weight that you would be able to push down. Hold the bar firmly in your hands with your elbows bent and palms facing down. Then slowly push the bar down and at the same time squeeze your triceps. Release the force from the bar gradually and let it come to its original position.

Forearms: Forearms signify your strength, therefore forearm development also is important. People tend to neglect their forearms perhaps out of ignorance or time constraints. But forearms are equally important in the overall development of the arms. To build huge and shapely forearms, you can perform an exercise such as:

  • Wrist Curls: Stand at a wrist curl machine and fix the weight to be lifted. Hold the bar in your hand. Lift the bar by moving your wrist upwards and then bringing down to original position. Do not bend the wrist too much. Wrist curls can also be done using free weights. But a machine workout is advised in the initial days, to avoid muscle injury.

Tips on Building Arm Muscles

Exercises: Exercises for arm muscle development are a must. You cannot escape exercises in any case! The first and foremost things to follow while doing exercises are punctuality and obedience. Exercises and workouts schedule need to be prepared with the help of a physical trainer and strictly followed. Do not try different exercises, unless you learn the proper technique to do them. Even for your regular workouts, try to lift lighter weights in the initial stages. Avoid using heavy weights that are beyond your capacities, as an imbalance, while lifting them, might land you in serious muscle pain or injury. In the initial days concentrate on higher number of sets and intense repetitions. Although this will not promote quick muscle gain, it will help you in increasing the strength of your muscles. Once you see considerable development in the size and shape of your muscles, you can move further to lift heavier weights.

Diet: Diet also forms an important part of your muscle building program. To obtain the best results, you need to adhere to a proper and balanced diet. To see your arms develop at a steady speed, you can include protein rich foods, vegetables, essential fatty acid foods, low calorie foods, a low carb diet and salads. However, get a proper diet plan prepared from a dietitian, as he would have a better understanding of the requirements needed by your body.

Sufficient Rest: Well, many people are regular in their exercises and are also concerned about their diet, however, they may overlook the importance of rest. Not having sufficient rest is a complete ‘no-no’ when it comes to muscle building. Sleep well! An undisturbed sleep of about 7 hours daily, refreshes your mind and body. Sleep is very much necessary for proper digestion of food and muscle relaxation.

Hopefully, you must have found this article informative and useful for your arm muscle building plans. If arm muscle development is the ultimate aim of your workout, then surely, you should be more attentive towards it, as compared to the other muscle groups. However, it would be better if you do not just restrict yourself to the arm muscles. Rather, do even justice to all the other body parts by targeting overall muscle growth to see your body grow proportionately.

Forklifts are like mini-trucks that are used for lifting and transferring heavy loads. These trucks have two forks (also known as blades) in the front that are used to lift loads that may weigh up to thousands of pounds. These steel blades can be moved forward and backward, and also up and down for lifting and moving cargo. The distance between the blades can be adjusted according to the size of the weight that needs to be lifted. Some of these can be operated on gas, while there are those that run on electricity. Though forklifts are widely used in warehouses to move heavy loads, these vehicles are also useful in moving heavy furniture, while moving from an old home to a new one.

Types of Forklifts
Based upon the structure, forklift trucks are of the following types:

Standard Trucks: These are the large, sturdy forklift trucks, that are used in warehouses. Standard trucks can lift weights that range between 3,000 to 4,000 pounds. The blades can lift cargo up to a height of 20 feet.

Reach Truck: These are narrow-aisle forklifts that usually run on electricity. They are designed for pallet storage, and can lift loads up to a height of 40 feet. If you are looking to lift and unload weights quickly over long distances, reach truck is not the one for you.

Vehicle Lift

Vehicle Lift

Order Selector: These are very narrow-aisle trucks that are useful for moving racked loads which are smaller than the pallet size. They can lift both the load as well as the truck operator to a height of 40 feet.

Motorized Pallet Trucks: These trucks are also known as walkies, riders or walkie riders. These vehicles derive their names from the fact that the operator does not have to sit inside the vehicle to operate it. In fact, he walks along the side of the truck as it moves the load.

Vehicle Lift

Vehicle Lift

Swing Mast Trucks: These are vehicles with a narrow aisle. They are similar in appearance to standard trucks. However, their masts can swing up to 90 degrees in one direction only.

Turret Trucks: Turret trucks also have a very narrow aisle. Like the order selector, they can lift both the load as well as the operator. However, in addition to that, turret trucks can swing the forks 90 degrees on either side.

Based on whether gas or electricity is used to run the forklifts, there are two types of forklifts:

Internal Combustion Forklifts: These vehicles run on gas, liquid propane, diesel or CNG (compressed natural gas). Although the forklifts that run on liquid propane can be used indoors, the gas-run forklifts are meant to be mainly used outdoors as they emit pollutants, and also can work even when it is raining. They can lift weights that range between 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. These vehicles cost less than the electric-run forklifts. However, effectively they are more expensive to use than the electric forklifts due to the fuel and maintenance costs.

Electric Forklifts: These run on batteries that need to be charged electrically. As they do not burn any fuel, there are no polluting emissions from these vehicles. Due to this reason, these are more suitable to be used indoors than the internal combustion forklifts. Also, these are quieter and do not require fuel storage units. However, they can’t lift loads greater than 15,000 pounds, and have a slower acceleration than those that run on gas.

Types of Forklift Attachments
Just like there are many types of forklifts, there are many special attachments too. Various attachments can be installed on a forklift. These attachments help to reach and lift objects easily. However, one should do a bit of research before buying any attachment for forklift. Because, using an unapproved or inappropriate attachment can alter the lifting of the forklift. This can also lead to imbalance of the forklift and overturn the forklift or cause other accident. There are many useful attachments that one can buy, but make sure it is compatible with the type of forklift you are going to install it on. There are hoist attachments which have a hook on them. These help to pick up large and heavy objects. There are also some special attachment which allow to lift a specific shaped object, like the drum grabber attachment. One can also find many personnel platform attachments. Other attachments are sideshifter, rotator, multipurpose clamps, scales, etc.

Forklifts have made moving heavy loads very easy and quick for us. However, as is the case with other vehicles, forklift accidents are also common. There are certain safety rules that need to be followed, the most important of which is recruiting a trained operator.

There a wide range of forklifts available in the market. The decision of selecting the right one depends upon the load that needs to be shifted, and whether the forklifts would be required to work indoors, outdoors or both. With a proper understanding of the different types of forklifts and one’s requirements, buying the right kind should not be a problem.

Forklift Forks

The forklifts that are available in the market use gasoline, diesel, electricity, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid

propane gas (LPG) etc. to power themselves. Each type of forklift has its own advantages and disadvantages. Following details will attempt to explain how a propane forklift works.

Why use Propane for Forklifts

The propane forklift has on-board tanks in which propane is stored. These tanks contain enough propane gas to last 8 hours. These tanks, when empty, can be easily removed and replaced or can be taken to be refilled easily. On the other hand, in case of CNG-powered forklifts replenishing CNG consumes time. LPG powered engines operate at a lower temperature than CNG. In case of electric-powered forklifts, it is necessary to let the batteries cool and then recharge, which can take about 8-9 hours. Charged batteries last only for 3-6 hours, depending upon its use. A 33 lb. steel tank can hold 8 gallons of propane, enough to carry out the job at hand and much more.

Propane Forklift: How does it Work

A forklift carries load on its forks that are located in front of the carrier and which point outwards. This load may obstruct the driver’s field of vision. For this reason, wheels at the rear control the steering of the forklift, thus enabling the forklift to be driven backward, while carrying load. The front wheels bear the burden of the load. Two forks stick out from the front of the forklift. These forks can be raised and lowered, and it is possible to tilt them downward or upward, as per the requirement. A hydraulic cylinder is responsible for these movements. A bar is fitted with roller chains; one end of which is attached to a frame, while the other end to a fork. The pressure applied by the hydraulic cylinder on the bar pulls or slackens the roller chains, which results in the fork’s movements. When a forklift is loaded, the front wheels bear the weight. The weight of the fork itself is supported by the counterweight on-board, which keeps the fork balanced.

Propane Forklift Safety

While working indoor, a forklift is operated using solid rubber tires, which are also called cushioned tires. Pneumatic tires are used for outdoor use. They can be used on asphalt, dirt roads, and generally, for heavy loads.

Propane-powered equipment are trusted to be safe. And, it is believed that propane is a clean burning fuel. But, what if the equipment or the engine is not properly tuned or maintained. Like all internal combustion engines, propane powered engines emit carbon monoxide (CO) and corrosive oxides of nitrogen. These gases can be very harmful in confined and improperly ventilated spaces.

Forklift Forks

Forklift Forks

Forklift Forks

Forklift Forks

Propane forklifts emit less harmful gases than diesel and gasoline powered forklifts. Propane has a simple chemical structure, and being a gas it mixes well with air as compared to diesel or gasoline, and also burns at a low temperature. Corrosive oxides of nitrogen produced during combustion of propane in the engine are less than those emitted by a gasoline or diesel engine. A propane forklift’s engine lasts longer than that of a gasoline or diesel powered forklift engine.

In an internal combustion engine, air is sucked into it from the surrounding area and is used to burn the fuel. A 60 hp forklift breathes in 5000 cubic feet of air per minute to operate.
It is advised to switch on a propane forklift and warm it outdoors, because emissions of carbon monoxide by a cold propane-powered engine/equipment is higher than that when it is warm.

Electric (battery)-powered forklifts cannot be used in the rain for fear of damage to batteries. An electric forklift can short out due to rainwater. And, how does a propane forklift work in the rain? Propane is stored in the on-board well-sealed tanks. So, there is no chance of rainwater getting in the tanks and disrupting the work. Propane forklifts are versatile as they can be used indoor and outdoor. Gasoline and diesel-powered forklifts may suffocate you with harmful gases, if they are used indoors. You can trust a well-maintained and properly tuned propane forklift to lift your load.

The demand of forklifts in warehouses and industries is very high. These machines are small vehicles that help to lift heavy goods, objects and transport materials from place to place, mostly within the industrial premises. Working with forklifts is extremely safe firstly, because they lessen a worker’s load by moving heavy items in the factory. And secondly these vehicles help prevent a lot of accidents from happening, regarding the factory goods and the life of a worker. These machines are popularly used in the construction sites, manufacturing industries and different types of warehouses. Many designs and manufacturing of forklifts is executed depending on the type of work and requirement of the industries. But overall, forklift vehicles are very powerful and compact in size ready to lift up the heaviest amount of load without any hassle. The question of how do forklifts work exactly depends on a few aspects. Generally, there are many types of forklifts available in the market and each of them function on different power sources. For instance, some operate on electricity, some on compressed natural gas (CNG), while others operate on gasoline or diesel. Depending on the type of load to be lifted and also the forklift work platform, thereby, these trucks are constructed.

Structure of Forklift Trucks: Short Introduction

Electric Trucks

Electric Trucks

From the above paragraph we are aware as to what do forklifts exactly do and how they help to move heavy loads in the quickest way. So you might wonder how these vehicles look exactly, right? Well, a forklift truck has two separate parts in its structure. One part helps to lift the heavy load and the other part helps to clutch the forklift down. There is a hydraulically operated mast attached in the vehicle which has forks in the front mainly used to move, raise, lower and lift the heavy goods in the industry. This mast is at times chain operated as well. The power delivered to the forklifts is sometimes exercised using batteries or an internal combustion engine. If an engine is employed to power the forklift, added counterweights would be necessitated at the rear of the forklift. And if the forklift is powered by batteries, they are fixed in the back of the truck for a counterbalance.

Why is there a counterweight in a forklift, you may ask? Well, it is present so that it can considerably balance the load which is lifted by the truck. The counterweight attached to the rear of the forklift which holds the forklift to the downside whilst it’s performing the lifting and lowering job. In the non-electric forklift trucks, this counterweight is made of a heavy iron cast. Whereas, in electric forklifts, the batteries are a part of counterweight.

With this structure and construction of a forklift, I hope you must have caught a gist of how forklifts work and perform different types of tasks effectively. Now to roll in the technical background, let’s see the working of forklifts.

How Forklifts Work?

Neither the structure of forklift trucks stated above was hard to understand and nor its working will be. The two steel blades or forks present at the front of the truck help to lift up real heavy loads effortlessly. Sometimes this small-sized machine can manage to lift thousands of pounds of goods as well. These forks are very easy to maneuver and operate. They can tilt, move up or down, in a vertical or downward position also. Mainly the fork’s position and movement depends on the amount of load to be moved. The hydraulic cylinders present at the mast with functional chains help apply pressure against the pole in order to move the load. When there is a load needed to be picked up, the forklift operator moves little backwards and then presses his steel bars under the goods so that it gets a thorough grip while lifting up. The rear wheels of the forklift truck are known to be the steering wheels and sometimes due to such a small wheeled construction, turning the vehicle at a short radius gets difficult. Speaking on terms of powering the forklift truck, it is powered by gasoline, electricity, diesel or sometimes propane too.

So, here was the working of a normal forklift truck. If you consider an electric forklift vehicle, keeping some knowledge on how do electric forklifts work could be informative too.

How do Electric Forklifts Work?

Electric Trucks

Electric Trucks

Firstly, in the subject of electric forklift vehicles, when the speed is considered, it’s seen that they have a very fast speed of operation. In addition to that, there is a thumb controlled handle which makes it so easy for an operator to maneuver while lifting and moving goods. For safety purposes, there is horn and bell reverse switch equipped with the vehicle. With all such facets in an electric powered forklift truck, the demand of these vehicles have literally raised to a high level in the market. These electrical forklifts can actual lift up loads more than 2600 pounds excessively to a height of 111”.

So here was an elaborate information on how do forklifts work? With this growing industrial market its hard to render labor work everywhere. Thus, if effective machines like forklifts are employed in the factories and warehouses, due to their uncomplicated mechanism, the work would be done faster and the business would boom to its peak. Forklifts are the most speediest modes of transport in the warehouse industries.

These techniques involve moves related to throwing an opponent off when attacking. There are different categories in these throwing techniques – hand throwing, foot throwing and hip throwing techniques. These throws are either standing or sometimes sacrifice throws. Some of these throws are -

One arm shoulder throw – Ippon Seoinage
This throw involves, as the name suggests, a person lifting a person (who is at his back) with one arm, then taking the weight on the shoulder and then throwing the opponent down. The other hand is not used much in such one handed judo moves. Read more on martial art techniques.

Corner Drop – Sumi Otoshi
Here, a practitioner lifts the opponent using both hands facing him at a slight angle and then throws the opponent on the ground. This throw is a part of 67 current throws in Kodokan judo.

Advanced Foot Sweep – Deashi harai
One of the foot throwing tactics, deashi harai is one of the advanced judo techniques. It is a kind of foot sweep. The person doing this starts off with having a firm grip over the opponent, facing him. Then the attacker moves his foot to the opposite side of the opponent, and sweeps the opponent’s opposite leg out from beneath him. This makes him lose balance. During this, the upper body has to support the push-pull motion with requisite powe,r created as a result of rotation of hips. This is essential for proper execution of this sweep. Scissor Lifts  Grappling Techniques
Grappling basically entails immobilizing the opponent by pinning him down on the floor and it does not involve lifting the other person. These can be done either standing or on the ground. These as said earlier are meant to disable the opponent. One such grappling technique amongst judo techniques is called Kani Basami or flying scissors. A person in this move balances his weight on one hand while his feet are in a scissor like position, holding the opponent in between his legs. Once that person holds the other person in between his legs, the opponent is then brought down to the ground using the force of the legs. One of the legs is almost at the end of the torso and the other is on the opposite side, under the opponent’s thighs.

Sacrifice Techniques
These judo techniques and tactics involve an individual throwing himself on the ground after lifting the opponent for throwing. This is called a sacrifice throw as along with the opponent the individual also goes down on the ground to avoid injury and then immediately overpowers the opponent. These judo techniques are mostly done standing. Read more on martial arts styles and descriptions.

Pins or Matholds
The objective of these moves are almost again the same as grappling; to disable the opponent. Here either the opponent is pinned down on the ground and in one of these moves one arm goes around the neck of the opponent and the other holds the opponent’s arm.   Scissor Lifts

Chokes or Strangles
As the name suggests, this entails choking or strangling the opponent by exerting pressure on the carotid artery. This too is similar to grappling judo techniques, but a bit more dangerous. These are very carefully used, when used in a competition and requires supervision and expertise.

Joint Locks
The opponent’s joints are locked by the other person again to prevent an attack. Knees, elbows and other joints are targeted in this techniques. Again, this is fundamentally a type of grappling.

Body-Striking Techniques
These techniques involve not just blocking or defense, these involve attacking moves. These include striking eyes of the opponent’s with fingertips, punches, upper cut, side and rear blow and variations of body strikes. Read more on martial arts styles comparison.

In addition to all these, there are techniques as to how to receive blows and how to fall purposefully to avoid blows. The list is quite big, actually, so I thought this would be really enough for this treatise!

Ultimately, all this reminds me of something said by Deng Ming-Da, a famous martial artist and philosopher – “Some Warriors look fierce, but are mild. Some seem timid, but are vicious. Look beyond appearances; position yourself for the advantage”.

Scissor Lifts

Scissors Lift

Scissors LiftScissors LiftLifts of any kind, like their name implies, are meant to raise people or things to higher levels. Many machines and devices have been innovated for this purpose. Aerial lifting equipments are devised for this purpose and are extensively used in factories, warehouses, ports, yards, and construction sites. A scissor lift is one such equipment that is widely popular. Scissor lifts usually can move only vertically. There are other aerial devices that can usually be moved vertically as well as horizontally.

Types Of Scissor Lifts

There are three main categories of scissor lift depending on the technology used to create the upward motion – hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical.

A hydraulic lift is commonly found in most places mainly because it is easy and simple to use as well as for being quite cost-effective. The hydraulic lift table uses one or more hydraulic cylinders to generate the upward and downward motion. It requires minimum human effort in handling it. It also has great capacity to withstand weight. In case of mechanical ones, pinions and screws are generally used. They are of limited capacity and can be used where the requirement to lift weights are limited to small objects and human beings. Pneumatic scissor lift uses the technology of air pressure to lift objects.

Scissors Lift

Scissor lift is generally weight-sensitive. They are able to bear different weight limits. There are scissor lift with the capability of lifting cars and much heavier machinery. Many of them are automatic. It lowers as more weight is added to them. It also comes as double and triple lifts. As the name suggests, double lifts have two pairs of crisscross legs on them and can go double higher and triple have three legs. It is generally made of strong metal that is quoted with enamel paint to reduce the possibilities of wear and tear and rust.

It is always advisable to have a scissor lift, no matter what the type, to be operated by a well-experienced and qualified person. They generally come as hand-operated or foot-operated. Operating these contraptions could be quite tricky and even a small error could cause bad accidents. Due to this, companies have now started to produce automated lifts that work with remote control. These robotic lifts are safer and do not need a human operating it from right underneath it. The operator can stand at a safe distance and operate the lift with the help of remote sensors. The problem with it is that it is extremely expensive and thus people prefer to select the much cheaper hydraulic lift that are more commonly available. But, they too are trying to improve the safety aspects of the lifts by adding toe guards, safety bars, skirts, fail arrests, and fuses.

Lifting Equipment

When you are searching for the best weight lifting equipment, you have to take the time to think about the workout that you want to get. Some equipment is better than others, depending on the type of fitness that you are looking for and the areas of the body that you want to work. If you’ve ever shopped for this equipment or visited a local fitness centre, you know that there is a lot to choose from and it can be very difficult to understand how everything works. Here are some basic types of weight lifting equipment to consider based on how they work:

Lifting EquipmentLifting Equipment

- Upper body machines are used to work the muscles of the upper body. These generally include a chair or a bench and a series of different arms or pulleys that can be used with your hands and arms to work the upper body. You can find these machines in many styles, including resistance machines, pulley machines, and even hammer strength machines that are similar to free weights.

- Squat press machines. These are unique machines that are made especially for doing squats to work out your leg muscles. They can also help your back, abs, and upper body to some degree. For some reason, these machines seem to provide better results than doing freestanding squats or using a total body machine to get the same workout.

- Lower body machines. This type of weight lifting equipment is designed specifically to help with lower body workouts. The different exercises that you can do on these machines will work every part of your lower body to help you get a more toned, muscular appearance.

- Total body equipment. Many people prefer to invest in machines that offer a total body workout. Not only does this give them the opportunity to get a better workout, but it usually makes better financial sense as well. Total body machines use resistance or pulley systems to offer a full workout in one machine.

Weight lifting equipment isn’t all the same, which is why it helps to understand your options before you go shopping for anything. Depending on the type of workout that you want and the specific muscles that you are trying to improve, there are different machines that can help. Make sure that you take the time to check out all of the different machines that are available and find the right equipment for your needs.
